The Retezat National Park is situated in the west of the South-Carpathians. It was established in 1935 and has an area of about 130 square kilometers. A large part was declared in 1979 a biosphere reserve and it was also included into the PAN Park since 2004.
Numerous peaks over 2000 m high, glacial lakes, moors and watercourses are marking the diversified landscape.The wealthy forest stands comprise dense forests of hornbeams, sessile oaks, walnuts, beyond it beech groves and furthermore coniferous forests of arolla pines up to the tree limit.
The alpine flora includes more than 900 species of plants. Representative for the fauna are chamois, marmots, lynxes, wolves, brown bears and birds such as ravens, golden eagles and nutcrackers. |
